For a year now, a full-scale war has been going on in the territory of Ukraine, which was started by Russia. Since February 24, 2022, the Ukrainian military has been bravely defending the independent borders of our state. Fierce battles for every centimeter of our land have been going on for 365 days and will continue in the future.

Russia began its invasion on February 20, 2014, when it introduced troops and occupied Crimea. Subsequently, in April of the same year, it began local hostilities in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. There it managed to hold illegal “referendums” and proclaim the so-called “DPR” and “LPR”.

We decided to make a summary before the anniversary of the full-scale war.

Everything about the military sphere in numbers

War is primarily large-scale bloodshed among the personnel of both sides. According to information that is freely available, we can conclude that losses between the military of Ukraine and Russia are radically different. As of December 1, 2022, Mikhailo Podolyak, Advisor to the Head of the President’s Office, reported that the number of dead Ukrainian soldiers is 13,000. Losses among the Russian military are significantly higher – 145,060 people died (as of February 22, 2023).

Also, 16 transfers of the bodies of the dead were carried out, as a result of which the repatriation of 869 bodies (remains) of those who died in connection with the war was provided. On November 27, 2022, Air Defense Spokesman Yuriy Ignat announced that Russia had launched more than 4,000 missiles and drones over Ukraine, which are aimed at exhausting our air defense.

The support of our allied countries was strong (we will describe only the largest cases). For example, during the war, NATO provided Ukraine with 120 billion US dollars, and the EU – seven tranches of military aid of 500 million euros. As of February 3, 2023, the total amount of military aid from the United States since February 24, 2022 amounted to $29.3 billion. Poland provided aid to Ukraine for at least 2 billion dollars.

In total, Ukraine received 5,474 UAVs, 1,080 artillery weapons, 113,000 anti-tank weapons, and 5,265 units of armored vehicles. We created a visualization to better explain which countries have helped us the most with weapons.

How was the infrastructure of Ukraine damaged during the year of the war?

Any damage to civil infrastructure always begins in the same way – with an air strike. This sound will forever be remembered by Ukrainians and will remain a reminder of what they experienced.

How was the civilian population affected during the war?

The civilian population of Ukraine has suffered greatly from Russia’s actions on our territory. The authorities of Ukraine assume that the number of dead and wounded ordinary people may, if not equal, exceed the number of military personnel. This happened because the Russian Federation is waging an open war against the civilian population, constantly shelling cities where hostilities are not taking place.

As of December 19, 2022, 6,826 dead and 10,759 wounded civilians are known. These data are constantly updated, and the true number of people affected by the war will be known only after its end. Then the relevant services will be able to get to the de-occupied territories and assess the scale of the tragedy.

Dead: 2,686 men, 1,822 women, 174 girls and 216 boys, as well as 38 children and 1,890 adults, whose gender has not yet been determined.

Wounded: 2,336 men, 1,690 women, 224 girls and 314 boys, as well as 252 children and 5,953 adults, the sex of which has not yet been determined.

A large part of Ukrainians lost their homes or had to evacuate their city. According to UNESCO:

“By the end of December, 2022, 7.9 million refugees from Ukraine had been recorded across Europe, with nearly 4.9 million registered for temporary or similar national protection schemes. Since the start of the response, 732,340 people have accessed safe spaces, 433,701 women and children primary health care, and 100,350 people, including children, safe drinking water”.

19 countries sheltered refugees, but the largest number of people found shelter in neighboring Poland.

Disappointing figure for internally displaced persons as well. Today, 4,867,106 IDPs are officially registered in Ukraine, and according to international estimates, the number of internally displaced persons exceeds 7 million citizens.

During the year of the war, Russia deported (kidnapped) 16,221 children from Ukrainian families and took them to its territories, where they were subjected to illegal adoption. A total of 307 children were returned home. Also, 345 children are currently missing and 9,909 have already been found.

The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has calculated the approximate number of crimes committed by Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine

Summing up, we would like to remind you that during the full-scale war on the territory of Ukraine, the Russians committed 70,958 war crimes. Among them: violations of the laws and customs of war, planning and waging aggressive war, and propaganda. Also, 16,826 crimes against national security were recorded. We do not yet know the exact figures regarding looting and violence against the civilian population of Ukraine, but we are sure that when they appear, it will be another confirmation of the need to isolate Russia from the civilized world.
